Head of English (MPS/UPS + Outer London Weighting + TLR £9,200

The School

Chadwell Heath Academy is an all-ability 11-18 six-form entry co-educational school serving the local community. We have approximately 1300 pupils on roll, including a Sixth Form of 350.  Our aim is to provide an exceptional, rounded education for all our pupils.  The key word for our school is ‘opportunity’; the opportunity to achieve success in all fields of activity – academic, sporting and creative.  We want our pupils to feel enthused by the opportunities on offer, both inside and outside of the classroom.  We want them to share our pride in the School they represent and believe firmly that they do.

In our last inspection the School was judged to be ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED in all categories. In 2017/18 our Progress 8 measure was 0.71 (and 0.62 for disadvantaged pupils) with the School designated ‘Well Above Average’.  Our Attainment 8 measure was 53.4 (and 49.3 for disadvantaged pupils).  90% of Year 11 continues with us in Year 12, studying a broad range of A-Level and vocational subjects.  Our retention rate at A-Level is 98%.  In 2018, 94% of our A-Level cohort went on to study at university.  We believe strongly in comprehensive education and its ability to change our pupils’ lives.

The Department

The English Department has an excellent, long-term track record of academic success. Our pupils continue to benefit from the commitment and dedication shown by a team of specialist teachers.  In 2017/18, an inspiring 91% of pupils in Year 11 achieved Grade 9-4 in English (Language or Literature).  In English Language GCSE the figure was 86%; in English Literature 88%.  Recruitment to A-Level is strong with three classes currently studying English Literature in Year 12.  We consistently produce a pass rate at A-Level of 100%.  In 2017/18, an encouraging 90% of students achieved Grade A*-C; 24% achieved A* and A.

At Key Stage 3 the Department – and school – follow a modular curriculum. In English this involves modules in language, drama, poetry and prose designed to embed, from an early age, the skills required at GCSE.  The curriculum is enhanced by dedicated reading lessons and – in Year 7 – an additional lesson targeting spelling.  The curriculum is further enriched by a range of extra-curricular activities that include Book Club, competitions in writing and public speaking, a Spelling Bee and theatre visits.  Pupils – in conjunction with teaching staff – manage their own library and engage in promotional, fundraising activities.
